Microsoft Opening up to Free Software?

Today the software giant announced it is ready to collaborate with the rest of the software world. Describing its interoperabilty initiative, Microsoft says it will open up application programming interfaces to all software users to “increase the openness of Microsoft software”.

Two Linux-based WiMax designs debut

Finnish wireless equipment integrator Elektrobit (EB) will showcase two new Linux-based, WiMax-connected product designs at GSMA in Barcelona next week. One is an Intel Menlow-based mobile internet device (MID) that uses virtualization to improve VoIP quality-of-service, while the other is a smaller handset that uses a NextWave WiMax chipset.

Linux phone stack firm gains new chip partners

Azingo revealed that its Linux-based phone stack will be part of a 3G phone reference design based on Broadcom’s dual-ARM-core BCM2153 multimedia baseband system-on-chip (SoC). Azingo also announced that Azingo Mobile will be integrated with a Samsung S3C2442 mobile-device SoC.

A stealth-mode startup is readying a Linux-based handheld gaming device with WiFi, USB, and a 4.3-inch 800×480 touchscreen. The “Pandora,” headquartered at OpenPandora.org for now, runs Linux on a next-generation ARM SoC with integrated OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics processor.

HP introduces Linux-based NAS appliances

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is debuting two Linux-based networked attached storage (NAS) devices for the consumer/SOHO market. Based on a Marvell Orion processor and equipped with a generous 512MB of RAM, the new low-end Media Vault appliances come in single- (mv2100) or dual hard drive (mv5100) versions.

Fedora 8 release imminent

Just over 3 hours now and the latest version of Fedora, 8, is to be released to the mainstream. 
Some mirrors have prepared with the ISO’s early and some people have already managed to download ISO’s.
